UCLA Projects

My architectural work @ UCLA spanned 21 years starting in 1984 with the Los Angeles Olympics and finalizing at the end of 2005.  The scope of the work transformed over the years in roughly 7 year periods.

The first 7 years were devoted to master planning the various areas of the campus such that informed growth could occur as needed and as funding became available.  This phase included diagramming the campus systems - pedestrian walkways, roadways, open space, landscape areas, building footprints, figure ground relationships, and topography, to assess where we could fit additional buildings.  The diagrams led to 3D massing studies showing general sizes of proposed buildings in relationship to existing buildings.  These studies allowed the campus administration to understand where and how much they could build while still maintaining the campus character and in fact improve it.

The following 7 years were devoted to designing infrastructural improvements within the areas master planned.  These projects included; landscape areas, hardscape areas - walkways/plazas, arrival/departure waiting pavilions, canopies, and then finally buildings and parking structures.  I was the lead architect/designer for these projects and became known for my ability to extract from the existing campus architecture the essential elements and create new structures that fit in with the existing campus character.  I called it "Mending the Fabric" since there were several sections of the campus where the edges never seemed to fit together and yet with a new walkway, building, landscape, etc. it felt whole.

With my skills from both the master planning era and the campus insfrastructure design period, I was selected to head the design activities for the proposed new research laboratory buildings.  The final 7 years were devoted to coordinating and guiding the design efforts of outside design consultants, Cesar Pelli, Ralph Johnson of Perkins & Will - Chicago, the Smith Group, and Paul Murdoch Architects.  These projects have a 5-7 year life cycle from master planning, programming, design, and finally construction completion.  These project were inserted in the first area that I master planned in 1984 and it was great to be able to have initiated the original diagrams and then guide the design of the final buildings.  The projects included 400,000 gsf of research related space of about $200,000,000 worth of construction.
