Bill studied at SCI-Arc - the Southern California Institute of Architecture located in Los Angeles, graduating in 1984 with a B. Arch. with honors receiving the AIA Henry Adams Award for Excellence in Architectural Design. He also was an assistant design instructor @ SCI-Arc for the 2nd year students as well as a vertical studio instructor for one semester. During the final year, 5 months were spent traveling and studing throughout Europe exploring the history of western architecture and how contemporary architects address the insertion of new buildings within ancient contexts. Prior to SCI-Arc, Bill studied at the Boston Architectural Center in Boston for one year and also @ the DCC-SUNY in New York, receiving the Associates in Applied Science degree in Architectural Technology in Poughkeepsie, New York where he grew up.
Previous Experience
Upon graduation @ SCI-Arc, Bill started working @ UCLA Campus Architects as a designer in preparation for the 1984 Olympics and developing Master Plans for the proposed future growth on the campus. Bill worked at UCLA for 21 years of which the first seven were spent on developing master plans for the entire campus, including; the student housing area, the AGSM business school, the Court of Sciences area, athletics area, Student Services Master Plan, CHS/hospital area, roadways, pathways, etc. and then the next seven years designing several buildings, pavilions, landscapes, fountains, earthquake retrofit projects, and then seven years as a project manager focusing on the master planning and design aspect of several new medical research buildings. Prior to UCLA, Bill had worked for various architects in the Los Angeles and Boston area.
Awareness/Understanding of Other Cultures
In search of how other cultures build, Bill has travelled throughout Europe, parts of Asia - China, Thailand, the Philippines, Mexico, and Canada. He received a travelling fellowship in 1995 from the Rotary Club to travel and speak in the Philippines for 1 month. He travelled to Europe for 5 months - England, France, Belgium, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. He has lectured in the US as well as Canada and Asia on Campus Design.
